Johnny Depp's 'Wonka' ready for release

Northwest Indiana News: nwitimes.com: "Early press materials for Tim Burton's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' opening in theaters in July, look promising. This time it's Johnny Depp wearing the top hat of the character Willy Wonka, made famous by Gene Wilder in the 1971 original. Much like the first film, the cast of young people in the new version are fairly new to feature film work, with the exception of Freddie Highmore, who plays the lead, Charlie Bucket. Press reports are Highmore, who starred with Depp in last year's 'Finding Neverland,' was cast by Burton after some convincing by Depp. A word of warning for all of the young actors and actresses. Actor Paris Themmen, who turns 46 this June, has found very few acting gigs after playing bratty 'Mike Teevee.' Last time I talked to him, he was at a Hollywood collectors' show signing autographs for $10 each wearing a cowboy suit like his character wore in the film. No kidding."

Depp movie causes upset on Caribbean island

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN - DEPP MOVIE CAUSES UPSET ON CARIBBEAN ISLAND: "The makers of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequel have sparked outrage on the island of Bataka, Dominica - by roasting JOHNNY DEPP alive on a spit in a cannibal scene.

Outraged residents of the tranquil island have accused studio bosses of insinuating their forebears practiced such inhumane rituals.

And CHARLES WILLIAMS, the chief of the 3,500 remaining natives, has added his voice of dissent - and has blasted the locals who have signed up as extras in the movie for $95 (GBP50) a day.

However, film bosses are attempting to downplay the uproar by insisting the scene is light-hearted and in no way reflects the history of Bataka."

Touring the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp

Coming Soon! - Latest News: "When you think of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, two things may immediately come to mind: the popular children's book by Roald Dahl from 1964 or the memory of Gene Wilder singing 'Candy Man' in the 1971 family classic, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

In the book and original movie, a young impoverished boy named Charlie Bucket wins a lottery to be one of five children to get a tour of the Wonka Chocolate Factory, makers of tons of popular confections. The company's owner is an eccentric inventor named Willy Wonka, who has never allowed anyone to visit the factory before this contest.

Having already brought his imaginative childlike vision and sensibilities to films like Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish, director Tim Burton didn't seem like an odd choice to bring Dahl's story into the 21st Century. After deciding to do the project, Burton immediately brought on Johnny Depp, an actor whose career has been intrinsically linked with that of Burton, to play the role of Willy Wonka, the chocolate factory's quite mad owner. Finding Neverland's Freddie Highmore was then brought on board in the title role of Charlie. "

Johnny Depp left covered in slime at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards

Johnny Depp: Johnny Depp left covered in slime at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards: "Johnny Depp was left covered in slime on Saturday night (02.04.05) after being tricked by host Ben Stiller at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

The Hollywood heartthrob had originally been brought on stage at the 18th annual awards ceremony, at the University College of Los Angeles' Pauley Pavilion, to cover 'Dodgeball' star, Stiller, in gunge after he volunteered to be 'slimed' - a traditional stunt at the annual ceremony.

However, when Depp pulled the lever to douse Stiller in thick, green goo, an enormous bucket of slime emptied onto him leaving him drenched in the foul substance.
Despite escaping a sliming, Stiller - who was wearing a silver body suit he said earlier in the evening would 'protect' him from a sliming - gamely smothered himself with the gunge by diving on the stage and rolling in it."

DVD Review: 'Finding Neverland', starring Johnny Depp

wnbc.com - Entertainment - DVD Review: 'Finding Neverland': "Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet soar in 'Finding Neverland,' a fascinating fictional take on the real-life events that inspired the classic play 'Peter Pan.' A recent Oscar nominee for Best Picture, there's no question that it's one of, if not the best film of last year.

Set in 1904 Edwardian England, Depp stars as famed playwright J.M. Barrie, who's coming off of another flop production. Even though he has the confidence of his loyal producer (Dustin Hoffman), there's no question that Barrie's in dire need of a hit.

The inspiration for it soon comes to Barrie during a morning stroll to London's Kensington Gardens, where he and his St. Bernard meet the four Llewelyn Davies boys and their widowed mother, Sylvia (Kate Winslet). Becoming fast friends with the family, Barrie discovers that his suffering imagination and boyish zest for life has been restored, giving him the inspiration for what is destined to become his greatest work."

'Pirates' stars, including Johnny Depp, set for high-seas junket

IOL: 'Pirates' stars set for high-seas junket
"Pirates of the Caribbean stars Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom are taking to the high seas for real by joining a round-the-world yacht race, it was announced today.

The Hollywood trio will help to crew a boat taking part in the gruelling Volvo Ocean Race.

The vessel will be named the Black Pearl - after the pirate ship in the film - and its sail will feature a giant skull and crossbones.

It is all part of a marketing stunt to promote the forthcoming release of the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The stars will split the race between them - Knightley will join the boat while it is in Europe, Bloom will cover South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and Depp will be on board when the yacht reaches the US and Brazil.

Each will undergo rigorous training at the race HQ in Portsmouth.

And while the rest of the crew must put up with the sort of living conditions yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur endured during her recent round-the-world voyage, the actors will be living in comparative luxury."
